Expecting Parents Should Meet with a Pediatrician Before a Child is Born

pediatrician

We encourage expecting parents to visit our pediatrician office. When pregnant, expecting moms spend much of their time at their OB/GYN. These appointments are critical to ensuring that the baby is developing correctly and that mom is healthy. We understand that these appointments are regular and can be time-consuming. Still, it is essential for expecting parents also to take the time to think about who will provide care for their child as soon as they are born. At that point, it will be up to the pediatrician to give an examination and ongoing care as the child grows. Having one lined up makes it easy to know how to proceed while still in the hospital.

Questions to ask a pediatrician

When selecting a doctor to treat a new baby, it is important to ask a few questions. These should include:

  • What hours is the practice open?
  • What insurance plans are accepted?
  • Is there an area for well children to sit that is separate from sick children?
  • Is there a nurse who can answer questions after hours?
  • Do they make hospital calls at the hospital where I am delivering?

The pediatrician should come to the hospital

Before the baby is released from the hospital, after being delivered, a doctor will need to conduct an examination. A baby cannot be released from the hospital without this being done, and it includes a physical exam to check things like their breathing, heart rate and response to stimuli. They will also be tested to determine if they are jaundice. It is also standard at the hospital for the baby to begin receiving their immunizations. If it is a boy, and parents wish to have him circumcised, this is also done at the hospital before the baby is released.

While still in the hospital, a babies hearing will also be tested. The doctor will review the results of this test to determine if any follow-up testing is required.

The pediatrician will provide directions for what to do next

After these evaluations and tests have been completed, the doctor will tell parents what to do next. This will include instructions for when to bring the baby to their office. In the first month of life, it is normal for a baby to visit the pediatrician up to four times. These regular appointments ensure that everything is okay, the baby is developing as he or she should, and that any critical immunizations are administered. Afterward, the baby will need to continue visiting the doctor on a set regular schedule. This may involve monthly appointments or visits every couple of months. Because of that, it is essential to choose a doctor who is conveniently located and has hours that work with a parents’ schedule.
