What to Do When Your Child Has a Fever

Any time that a child is not feeling well it is up to the parents to determine what exactly is wrong so that they can provide proper treatment. When a fever is present, it is important to give the child plenty of fluids so that they stay hydrated. It is also important for parents to keep a close eye on their child in order to look for any additional signs. These signs can let parents know whether or not the fever may be related to serious illness and is therefore important to keep in mind.

What to know about fever

Every parent may expect their child to have a fever every now and again, which is completely normal and tends to go away in a day or two. When a fever lingers or is very high, most parents become concerned about their child’s fever, leaving most wondering what to do.

When a child’s body temperature reaches 100.4 degrees, they officially have a fever. They may feel warm or hot, and will often sweat due to their fever, which is why it is essential that they consume liquids throughout the day when suffering from a fever.

What causes fevers?

There are many things that can cause fevers in children, including but not limited to having an infectious disease, taking certain medications, being diagnosed with heat stroke, being diagnosed with the flu, being diagnosed with certain allergies and being diagnosed with a brain disorder.

What parents can do for their children

The following is a list of things parents that can do to help their children when they are suffering from a fever. The focus should be on controlling their temperature, preventing dehydration and keeping a close eye on them to look for any signs that their fever may be more than just a fever.

- Give them pediatric-recommended medications to bring down their temperature, as well as plenty of liquids.

- Place a cold compress on their head and/or give them a lukewarm bath.

- Dress them in light layers and/or lower the temperature of the room.

When children need to see a medical professional

There are certain signs that parents should watch out for that indicate that it is time to take their child to see a medical professional for fever treatment. These signs include but are not limited to a stiff neck, a severe headache, a severe sore throat, severe ear pain, extreme drowsiness, seizures, younger than four months old or a temperature over 104 degrees. If a fever lasts longer than one day in a child under two years or lasts longer than three days in a child over two years of age, this also warrants a trip to see a medical professional.
